So, I picked up Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 again today. In case I haven’t told you, the way I read is if I don’t finish it in a week I will probably pick it up in six months or so, finish 50-100 pages, then put it down for another six months. Just the way I am. Anyway, I had come back around to this one and I came across an anecdote that sent a cold wet shiver down my leg. Thompson was relating how he’d spent some time on an airplane with the owner of the Washington Redskins who was explaining to Thompson that he backed Ed Muskie because he felt Muskie was the only man who could beat Nixon in the election (for those like me who are more than a decade to young to remember ’72, Muskie didn’t even end up getting the Democratic nomination). That is pretty much the exact same argument I heard in ’04 for pretty much every Democratic candidate folks backed against Bush.

Some of you may look at that and think “yeah! Bush is bad like Nixon!” I’m hoping some of you look at that and understand my despair. 32 years later people are still using the same excuse for compromising democracy, and it’s always important. “Oh, well this time it’s really vital because the guy we want to get rid of is really awful.” And, of course, it totally works. I mean, Nixon was defeated in ’72 and Bush was defeated in ’04, right?

Oh, wait … no, that’s not what happened. That’s not what happened at all.

So, how will we compromise democracy next year. Let’s see … there are already so many hoops any third party or even write-in candidate has to jump through just to get on the ballot our only alternatives tend to be the independently wealthy or people with party ties who decided they didn’t want to play with the other kids. This is also known as the same shit in a different wrapper. The arguments against allowing for allowing for more parties to participate basically amount to mumbling about how it might confuse voters or how it would cost more. So, what we have next year will be just another election where we are picking from people from the same social strata who represent more or less the same interests. Hell, it’s possible that our candidates might even be related.

I am filled with joy. The same kind of filthy horrible glee that I am filled with when I see porn titles like Anal Asspirations 5. I probably won’t enjoy watching it that much, but the overall concept tickles me a bit and however things turn out you know that there is going to be a lot of ass fucking.
